Missing Iranian scientist mystery – what does it really mean?

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Shahram Amiri, the missing Iranian nuclear scientist linked to the Revolutionary Guards, while he was on the Hajj has heightened speculation that he defected and gave vital information on Iran’s nuclear programme to western nations. Iran has accused the US of being involved in Amiri’s disappearance. Iran also brought up the case of the former defence minister who vanished in Turkey in 2007. Speculation is that he also defected. Amiri disappeared only a few months before the revelation last month of a secret uranium enrichment facility near the city of Qom. The timing has led experts to question whether Amiri may have given the West information on it and other parts of Iran's nuclear programme.
