Ambassadorial gay pride heads for Kiwi country

Barack Obama plans to nominate an openly gay lawyer as ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. If confirmed by the Senate, David Huebner would become America’s third openly gay ambassador. American ambassadors are selected by the president and then the Senate must “advise and consent” to the nomination before it is official. Huebner is a lawyer based in Shanghai. A Yale Law School graduate, he was the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation's general counsel and had been on the group's board. He has also chaired the California Law Revision Commission and taught law at the University of Southern California. This announcement comes just days before Obama addresses a gay rights fundraising dinner.
