Now Mugabe wants to be pals with West

By Daily Maverick Legacy 7 October 2009

Robert Mugabe says Zimbabwe wants friendly relations with Western countries, but this is because he wants sanctions against his country lifted, rather than holding out a real hand of friendship. He has long accused the US and Britain of ruining the economy in retaliation for his government’s seizing of white-owned farms. The West also detests his human rights abuses, including murder and torture of opponents and his blockading of the media. Mugabe formed a unity government in February with his nemesis, opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, to try to reverse the nine-year economic collapse. But, at the same time, he still urges youths in his Zanu-PF party to go and take more farms.
