World Bank aids African broadband
In an attempt to add backbone to Africa’s Internet offerings, the World Bank will provide $215 million to bring reliable, high-speed, low-cost Internet access to the centre of the continent. Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic will take part in the initial $26.2 million phase. While it is the fastest-growing telecoms market in the world, Africa's broadband growth has been hampered by costly international bandwidth and poor national infrastructure. Congo-Brazzaville, Equatorial Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe and Sudan are also able to participate in the programme, which is supported through a partnership between the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
