The ANC Youth League likes Chuene, local music

Julius Malema says his organisation wants massive local music quotas, its own radio station (pretty much) and a less apologetic Leonard Chuene.

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema celebrated his return from the United States with a press conference today, where he picked a fight with the media, said Leonard Chuene had nothing to apologise for and announced a League foray into music politics.

The media event followed his meetings with the interim SABC board and the Athletics SA president respectively, much in the way heads of state will hold conferences to discuss their most recent summit meetings.

On the agenda with the SABC: joy at the end of the Mbeki-era of governance of the broadcaster (we’re assuming; he didn’t say as much); a Youth League demand for local radio stations to draw 75% of all the music they play from South African artists; and the need for the SABC to launch a radio station aimed at the youth. YFM is apparently not cutting the mustard.

With Chuene, it would seem, Malema described how unfairly he had been treated by the counter-revolutionary media, feelings they doubtlessly share. At the press conference Malema said it was opportunistic to try and use the non-issue of the treatment of (and lies about) Caster Semenya to remove Chuene. He also said sponsors should toughen up and keep funding the athletics body.
