Clothing sector strike settled.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration managed to facilitate a wage agreement between bosses and workers in the clothing industry and avert a potentially crippling strike. Union general secretary Andre Kriel said yesterday evening the union believed the deal addressed “all the core issues." The next two days will see the terms of the settlement communicated to the union members and, once a mandate was obtained, details would be released. Only then would a decision be taken to formally call off the strike, said Kriel. The union had demanded a 7.9% increase, with paid sick leave and bigger increases for workers in rural areas. Employers had offered an 8% wage hike with conditions the union would not accept at the time.
