Mozambique slaps political parties with election ban

In what appears to be a reasonable act of democratic due process, Mozambique’s Constitutional Council dismissed appeals brought by eight of 14 political parties excluded from imminent October elections. The parties appealed after the electoral commission ruled their candidates had submitted incomplete nomination papers. If South Africa’s ruling party is anything to go by, this is not such an unusual event in regional elections, although it remains to be seen which parties were told off. Rulings on the appeals made by the remaining six parties may now be published. Whether there’ll be appeals against the appeals remains to be seen. What’s most appealing though is that all this seems fully transparent, although one can only guess at the underlying political shenanigans. Watch this space.
