The leader of Germany's centre-left Social Democrats and other top officials quit yesterday after the party's worst election result since World War II and relegation to the opposition. Franz Muentefering, former right-hand man of the SPD's last chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, announced he was quitting as party leader following the SPD’s loss to Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, which ended the broad coalition with SPD to form a new government in coalition with the business-friendly Free Democrats.
