Goldstone presents Gaza War report

South African Judge Richard Goldstone, lead investigator in the UN inquiry into last year’s Gaza conflict, warned the lack of accountability for war crimes in the Middle East had “reached a crisis point” and was undermining any hope of peace. Goldstone commented in Geneva as he presented his final report on violations of human rights and international law in the three-week war in Gaza last winter to the Human Rights Council. “A culture of impunity in the region has existed for far too long,” Goldstone said. He urged the 47-member HRC to adopt the report, recommending the Security Council require Israel to report within six months on the results of its own investigations into the reports’ findings. If there were no good faith investigations within that time, the Security Council should refer the issue to the International Criminal Court.
