Death toll in Guinea protest almost trebles

The death toll in protests against Guinea’s coup leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara has risen from 57 to 157 says local rights group, the Guinean Organisation for Defence of Human Rights. The riots saw 50 000 people take to the streets in response to rumours that the country’s military leader intended running for president in an election scheduled for next year. Now reports of soldiers bayoneting protesters and women being raped, have junta boss Camara scrabbling for “plausible deniability”. An interior ministry source told the BBC soldiers had fired live rounds into the crowd, but said only four people had died from gunshot wounds while others were trampled to death. It’s going to take a while to sift fact from fiction, but the army, which took power shortly after long-time dictator Lasana Conte died in December, is the same one that served his regime. Seems the people believe the more things change after 25 years, the more they’ll stay the same.
