Netcare charged in organs syndicate

Private hospital group Netcare has been charged with several offences relating to its alleged role in an international organ-selling syndicate. Among the individuals accused are Netcare chief executive Richard Friedland, doctors, transplant unit staff and a Hebrew interpreter. The case was originally investigated in 2003, but charges were withdrawn owing to lack of evidence. The plan allegedly involves Israeli citizens visiting South Africa for kidney transplant, with the organs supplied by Israelis, Peruvians, and Romanians, among others.
