Bill for free education could be R18bn
The cost of delivering on the 2007 Polokwane conference's resolution on free education at public schools could be anywhere from R5bn to R18bn, according to report in TimesLive. President Jacob Zuma has called for the implementation of free education to be fast-tracked. Currently, 66% of public schools are no-fees schools, and receive a subsidy per pupil ranging from R147 to R855, with a sliding scale depending on whether the schools themselves are classified as poor or affluent.
