Press Council to review its Constitution

The Press Council of South Africa has announced that a team has been convened to review its constitution. The team, comprised of the council's deputy chair Bewyn Petersen, The Star's editor Moegsien Williams, University of the Witwatersrand journalism Professor Franz Kruger, and businessman and Press Appeals Panel (PAP) public representative Simon Mantel, would review the PCSA's constitution, the SA Press Code and the complaints procedure. Joe Thloloe, the Press Ombudsman, stressed that outside regulation was unconstitutional and out of the question. This review comes in the wake of criticism against the media's current regulatory processes which emerged in the media appeals tribunal with the ANC. This move is unlikely to impress the ruling party, as their position is that independant regulation of the media is not enough. Read more: SAPA, via TimesLive.
