Pakistani court sets aside amnesty for politicians
Pakistan’s supreme court struck down a controversial amnesty that had dismissed allegations of corruption against thousands of Pakistani politicians, including President Asif Ali Zardari. This decision effectively reinstates the cases against them. While the president has immunity from prosecution under Pakistan’s constitution, the court order is almost inevitably going to further weaken Zardari’s standing in the country. Petitions challenging his eligibility as a presidential candidate will probably follow this decision and a dozen of his senior advisors will likely face new charges.
