Somali kidnappers free journalists for $1 million ransom
Somali kidnappers have freed two freelance journalists abducted in the capital, Mogadishu, in August 2008, after a $1 million ransom was paid. Canadian Amanda Lindhout and Australian Nigel Brennan were abducted by armed men as they reported from a refugee camp. Brennan said he was pistol-whipped and kept in chains for 10 months, and that his kidnappers threatened to sell him to the radical Islamist al-Shabaab group, which regularly launches deadly attacks on African Union peacekeepers. Lindhout said she was beaten and tortured.
