Jayalalithaa Jayaram, the chief minister of south India’s Tamil Nadu state, has passed away. The ‘Iron Lady of India’ died after being hospitalised for a fever. Jayaram enjoyed widespread popularity throughout India. Hundreds of devotees have since flocked to the hospital in Chennai where she had been treated.
LA Metro in security clampdown
Security at transit stations has been ramped up for Tuesday after an anonymous caller threatened to blow up a Los Angeles subway station. As the caller specifically mentioned the Universal City station, near the popular Universal Studios theme park, police and undercover security will be deployed throughout the network.
Abe announces Pearl Habour visit
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will visit Pearl Harbour in December. With the anniversary looming on 7 December, Abe will be the first Japanese leader to visit the iconic naval base. The visit mirrors President Barack Obama’s trip to Hiroshima and will commemorate those that fell during the battle.
Dylan and Clapton pieces under the hammer
Original manuscripts by Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton are to go on auction, Sotheby’s announced late on Monday. Included in the collection is an original version of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, which is expected to sell for $300,000 to $500,000. Original lyric sheets of ‘Layla’, Clapton’s hit song, are also set to go under the hammer.
