Rain did little to deter the students on Friday morning as they went from campus to campus covered in plastic from head to toe.

On Thursday, they vowed to shut down the university after UCT suspended, interdicted and expelled students involved in protests against fee increases. They called for the institution to #BringBackOurCadres.

On Friday, the university said it was monitoring the situation.

“Please note that the university remains open today. We recognise the right to engage in legitimate and peaceful protest and urge protesters to respect the rights of other members of the campus community to attend classes and arrive at work,” it said.

Earlier in the day, the university said students had blocked access to Baxter Road on the Lower Campus, leading to Jammie shuttle buses being diverted.

“Campus security is monitoring the situation and seeking ways to reopen access to Baxter Road.”

By 10:30, the Jammie routes were open again.

On Thursday, students gave the university 48 hours to respond to their demands.

While the institution itself still remains open on Friday, a growing chorus of protesters have pushed ahead and caused disruptions in lecture halls and other areas.
