Young Blood vs Dead Wood: Where are the ANC’s Maimanes and Malemas? 

The 2016 local government elections did more than shift power and major municipal budgets away from the ANC. It exposed how the ANC’s antiquated traditions are hampering the rise of young leaders and stunting generational change. The ANC elections campaign recycled the same tired ideas and useless rhetoric, with the only new twist being ageing, uninspiring leaders performing a new dance move. The two main opposition parties saw young leaders Mmusi Maimane and Julius Malema take the lead, redefine the terrain and change the conversation. At the same time, the ANC is gearing to elect a new leadership next year with no strong, young leaders ready to grab the mantle. By RANJENI MUNUSAMY.

Rio Olympics end, Japan’s promises begin

A Super Mario-imposed Shinzo Abe entered the Rio closing ceremony overnight. Amidst a blaze of Brazilian colour, Japan’s prime minister promised to host the best games ever in 2020. With any luck, better crowds, less corruption, and a few new sporting events will take place in four years. Read More

Three Irish officials arrested in Rio

As if on cue, three Irish Olympic officials were arrested by Brazilian authorities on Sunday. The individuals are accused of conducting widespread ticket sales fraud and have had their passports seized. Allegations include selling tickets for the opening ceremony valued at $1,400 for $8,000. Cilic upsets Murray

Croatia’s Marin Cilic has denied Andy Murray the No 1. spot at Cincinnati. Cilic defeated Murray 6-4, 7-5 to win the Masters title. Murray’s 22 game winning streak, meanwhile, is in tatters. Read More

China opens glass-bottomed bridge

The world’s highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge has now been officially opened in China. Spanning 430 metres and suspended 300 metres above the earth, the bridge costs $20 to walk along and is limited to 8,000 visitors a day. High heels are not allowed, presumably to mitigate the risk of a slip and fall of a lifetime. Read More
