Coalition talks: Small parties throw big demands into the mix

Talks between South Africa’s major political parties on coalitions have not yet yielded any breakthroughs. None of the political parties had anticipated that the 2016 local government elections would result in such a medley of outcomes, with no outright winner in four of the eight metros. It has been difficult to switch from aggressive campaign mode to negotiations mode, which naturally involves bargaining and compromise. Smaller parties appear to have big demands, including the “removal” of the president, which make for tricky negotiations. The situation requires political maturity and some out-of-the-box thinking. Le Clos but no cigar

The 200m fly razzle-dazzle in which Chad le Clos and Michael Phelps squared off against each other was highly anticipated by Olympic watchers. This remark, while shocking, would likely not budge a single Trump supporter. Read More

As it happened: Rowers make up for sailing and swimming disappointment

Men’s rowing pair, Lawrence Brittain and Shaun Keeling, have qualified for the final and the men’s fours went through to the semis after winning in the repechage. In sailing, Stefano Marcia ended 42nd out of 46 boats and it was a disappointing night in the pool for Cameron van der Burgh and Jarred Crous in the men’s 200m breaststroke and the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team – none of whom managed to progress past their heats. Catch up on all the action you might have missed with our blow-by-blow account of day four. Read More
