LGE2016 Results: ANC takes battering while opposition heads for coalition talks 

Whatever the final outcome of the 2016 local government elections, the African National Congress (ANC) has received a nasty wake-up call from the electorate. With almost 90% of the votes confirmed by late Thursday night, the ANC had already lost one metro and was locked in a nail-biting race for control of the three Gauteng metros. A significant portion of the ANC’s support base has clearly turned against Africa’s oldest liberation movement. The Democratic Alliance (DA), meanwhile, has exceeded its own expectations and scored major psychological victories in this election. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is unlikely to win a municipality, as it had hoped, but now steps into the role of kingmaker in Gauteng. By RANJENI MUNUSAMY.

Gauteng too close to call

Another day, and another few hours of waiting to see what happens with Gauteng. At the time of writing, the ANC and DA were neck and neck in Tshwane and Johannesburg. The latter showed both parties having 11 seats each. Expect Friday to be full of deflections from the ruling party and, with Nelson Mandela Bay locked away by the opposition, champagne at Helen’s house. Read More

Regardless of other regions, the opposition has scored a resounding victory in the Western Cape. Boosting their support base and defeating the ANC in Beaufort West has created a provincial opposition foundation. Add to this Nelson Mandela Bay and the ANC appears set for its worst election result in democratic history. Read More

Egypt claims ISIL’s Sinai head

Egypt has announced that it had killed the head of Daesh in the Sinai. The leader, Abu Duaa al-Ansari, was apparently killed by an Egyptian air strike, authorities announced on Thursday. If verified, this could be a significant counter-terrorism step in the region. Read More

Bafana Bafana draw with Brazil

Ahava Samba that! A 10-man baby Bafana held on for a draw against Brazil in their Olympic opener on Thursday night. Neymar failed to find his fire and all South Africans will soon be campaigning for the under-23s to be made senior players. Read More
