LGE 2016: Scrum over Mandela’s legacy exposes hollow heart of SA politics

Two-and-a-half years after his passing, who would’ve thought that Nelson Mandela would be featuring in this year’s local government elections? Instead of big issues that should be in contention in this poll, the African National Congress and Democratic Alliance are fighting over which party is entitled to use Mandela as a campaign weapon. Mandela’s legacy might belong to the world but his political affiliation was not universal. The question is: why should Mandela even be a factor when people make a decision about who to vote for? Spain deploys army to fight wildfires

Over a score of aircraft and 130 soldiers have been deployed to fight wildfires near Valencia. The fire is largely out of control, destroying 1,400 hectares of wilderness. Thus far no residential areas are threatened, but the region’s bat and fox populations are. Read More
