We didn’t start the fire: Tshwane ‘unrest’ exposes ANC’s disconnect 

The ANC has found it extremely difficult to admit that the announcement of Thoko Didiza as its mayoral candidate for Tshwane sparked a wave of violence it is unable to control. A number of senior leaders say that irrespective of who was chosen, there would have been a rebellion from within ANC ranks. The ANC is blaming the burning of public property and looting on “thugs”, “anarchists” and “hooligans” but the initial stoking of fires clearly came from inside. Disowning its supporters does not exonerate the ANC from responsibility for allowing factionalism and patronage to engulf the organisation and for the state of unrest in the country. North Korea tests missiles

Dear Leader’s starving nation has successfully tested two medium range ballistic missiles. The launching of two intermediate-range Musudan warheads has demonstrated the dictatorship’s ability to send a missile to US bases such as Guam. Read more

Brexit an ‘act of self-harm’

European Commission president, Jean-Claude Juncker, has criticised pro-Brexit campaigners, calling a departure from the EU an act of “self-harm”. The 23 June referendum will ultimately decide, Juncker argues, whether Britain chooses to depart from everything the organisation has built in favour of isolation. Read more

Bears use ‘human shields’ to protect young

A new study released on Wednesday has revealed a fresh development in the behaviour of Sweden’s bears. Mothers of cubs have shown a tendency to bring their cubs closer to human settlements while raising their young, using humans as a protection mechanism against hostile males. The ‘right to bear arms’ now has a whole new meaning. Read more

The vastly reduced United States football squad has just faced a stunning 4-0 defeat at the hands of Argentina. With few starting big names available, the US were picked apart by Lionel Messi’s squad, with the latter scoring one goal and assisting in another two. Read more
