Olympics: German athletes to bank 20,000 euros per Rio gold

Germany's silver medallists at the Rio Games, from August 5-21, will receive 15,000 euros for silver and 10,000 for bronze while finalists will bank from 5,000 euros for fourth place to 1500 for finishing eighth and last.

The scale will also be used for the Paralympic Games in Rio, from September 7 to 18, and is the same as the one used for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The only exception in Rio will be for Germany’s mens’ and women’s football teams who would receive a team bonus of 720,000 euros from the German FA (DFB) for winning the Olympic title.

According to the head of the DSH foundation, Michael Ilgner, the bonus is not to “reward Olympic success”, but to “promote the development of talent” in preparing for the future.

The DSH paid out a total of 1,336,875 euros to Germany’s medallists for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
