Court bid to stop Joburg Bible-burner

The Scholars of the Truth organisation is seeking an interdict later this afternoon against a man who wants to burn Bibles tomorrow. Mohammed Vawda has vowed to burn Bibles in the Library Gardens on Saturday afternoon in protest of plans by a small church in Florida to burn the Qur'an on the anniversary of 9/11. The advocate for the Scholars of the Truth says that Vawda's actions constitute incitement to violence. The pastor of the Florida church says he has temporarily suspended plans to burn the Qur'an, ahead of a meeting with Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the head of the Cordoba Initiative, which has sparked huge controversy in New York with plans to build a Muslim centre near the Ground Zero site.
